Description
Immerse yourself in Montmartre’s rich cultural history. Skip the ticket line and enter the museum, once a gathering place for artists. Explore the permanent collection while experiencing the authentic Montmartre atmosphere.
With your audio guide, learn about Montmartre’s transformation after its annexation to Paris in the 19th century. Discover how artists settled here from the 1870s, giving rise to numerous cafés and cabarets in the 1880s.
Montmartre hosted the renowned Chat Noir cabaret and Théâtre d’Ombres, a shadow theatre created in 1866 by Henri Rivière and Henry Somm. Theatre, music, circus, and dance all played a significant role in the district’s cultural life. Visitors came to hear artists like Aristide Bruant and Yvette Guilbert or see performances by dancers La Goulue, La Môme Fromage, and Grille d’Égouts at the Moulin Rouge.
Artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec frequently depicted these performances. The creative energy extended to the artists’ studios at 12 Cortot Street, where many painters documented their residence with affection.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. The audio tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, but guests are welcome to continue exploring the museum at their own pace.
