Description

You enter a French cheese shop. There are 200 cheeses. The cheesemonger looks at you and asks: “What would you like?” You panic. Don’t worry. By the end of this tour, you’ll know exactly what to do. I’ve spent years studying French cheese through the eyes of both an art historian and a chef. On this 2.5-hour walking tour, I’ll show you how to navigate a French cheese counter, understand the main cheese families, order like a local and, most importantly, discover what you actually like to eat. We’ll visit three authentic Parisian fromageries and stop for several small, curated cheese picnics along the way. You’ll taste eight different French cheeses with baguette, all included. (On rainy winter days, we’ll simply move our tastings into a cozy cheese cave). Meet me just behind Notre-Dame Cathedral and learn why cheese is such an important part of French life. We’ll take a short walk through the history and culture of French cheese before heading to our first fromagerie. Our first stop is a traditional Parisian cheese shop in the Marais. You’ll discover the main families of French cheese and, most importantly, how to choose cheese like a local. What do you do when the cheesemonger asks what you want? How much should you buy? And how do you know which cheese is right for you? Then it’s time to taste two French classics: Brie and Camembert. Discover the differences between them, how to taste them, and why they became so iconic. From there, we set off on a wild journey through the regions of France: from Burgundy and Provence to the Loire Valley, Auvergne, Savoie and Occitanie. We’ll try them all: soft cheeses, goat cheeses, washed-rind cheeses, pressed cheeses, blue cheeses, and even a cheese I’ve never tried, so we can discover its flavor profile together (there are 2,000 in France!). After 2.5 hours, three Parisian fromageries and eight different cheeses, you’ll have discovered a 'very ancienne' French side of Paris that most visitors never see. And more importantly, you’ll know how to walk into a French cheese shop and know what to order. Welcome to France. I think you’re French enough now. ;)
