Description
The Arc de Triomphe is a Neoclassical monument inspired by ancient Roman triumphal arches. Commissioned by Napoleon after his victory at Austerlitz, the arch stands 50 meters tall and offers a unique vantage point overlooking Paris. From its platform, you can observe the twelve avenues that spread out across the city.
At the base of the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring the 1.3 million French soldiers who died in World War I. The eternal flame there is rekindled daily at 6:30 PM. An exhibition near the tomb explains the monument’s symbolic significance.
Visitors must climb 284 stairs to reach the rooftop terrace, where unrestricted views over Paris await. The elevator is available only for disabled visitors and stops at the gift shop level with 50 steps remaining to the top. Unlike the Eiffel Tower, access requires more physical effort, and many visitors skip this site.
