- Visit the monument at your own pace
- See the final resting place of over 70 notable French historical figures
Description
The Panthéon, originally designed as a royal church by Soufflot (1713–1780), now serves as the burial site for prominent French personalities from the French Revolution and beyond. The monument features a major exhibition on Soufflot’s career, highlighting his contribution to French architecture, including the Church of Sainte-Geneviève, now the Panthéon.
Commissioned by Louis XV to glorify the monarchy, the building was deconsecrated in 1791 during the French Revolution and redefined as a national mausoleum. Throughout the 19th century, it shifted between a religious site and a patriotic symbol.
Since Victor Hugo’s death in 1885, the Panthéon has been the final resting place for French writers, scientists, generals, clergymen, and politicians. The crypt contains tombs of over 70 distinguished figures such as Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Émile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, and Pierre and Marie Curie.
From the restored upper floors, open from April to October, visitors can enjoy elevated views across Paris.
