The Château de Fontainebleau is also home to extensive gardens and lakes, so take time to stroll through the gardens. -Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte The impressive Baroque Château is said to have inspired the Château de Versailles. Discover elaborate interiors and vaulted cellars, and learn about the man behind this gigantic house, Nicolas Fouquet, King Louis XIV's Minister of Finance. After Fouquet entrusted the design of Vaux-le-Vicomte to a renowned architect, the king took offense and threw the minister in prison.
